Emergency Care for Children in HUSKY A: 2006 (February 2008)

This report finds that almost two in five children in HUSKY A (Medicaid managed care) were seen in emergency care settings in 2006. One in three children who had an emergency department visit sought care for an ambulatory care sensitive condition, i.e., a condition that is amenable to treatment in an outpatient setting. Well-child care did not appear to reduce use of emergency care, suggesting that other factors such as reduced hours of access to primary care or parent knowledge and judgement may be involved in the seeking of emergency care for conditions that can be treated in a primary care setting.
