Keeping Children Healthy and Insured Through HUSKY

Mary Alice Lee, Ph.D., Sharon Langer, J.D., M.Ed. and Taby Ali

HUSKY has helped to reduce the number of uninsured families in the state, and preventive care through HUSKY reduces costs for the entire health care system. To encourage enrollment in HUSKY and reduce the number of uninsured, this brief suggests, among other measures, restoring continuous eligibility (which enables children to keep HUSKY coverage for one year, regardless of modest fluctuations in family income); maximizing the use of available federal dollars by reducing premium costs and expanding the benefit package; and supporting federal efforts to make coverage more accessible and affordable.
